Firstly, the area where the edging will be installed has to be prepared.  Ground preparation is very important in achieving a professional looking product.

A trench, two inches deep (5 cm) and eight to ten inches wide (25 cm), around the landscaping beds is all that is necessary to accommodate the kerb machine .

Secondly, the mortar is made in a special mortar mixer. Sand, cement, fiber and water are the basic ingredients. The final consistency of the mortar is very important to produce a perfect, beautiful and long-lasting kerb. Coloring agents can be added to modify the aspect and enrich the final result.

When the mortar is ready, it has to be poured into the kerb machine to be extruded in a continuous and very regular way.
Then, after the curb is laid down, depending on the configuration, you may have to use a specially formed hand tool to smooth and to perfect the finish of the kerb.
It also possible to make impressions on the kerbs, by using various stamping tools. The realization of impressions is made when the mortar is still damp thanks to the various tools created in this usage. Moreover, other techniques of colouring can be done at this moment.
As a precaution to cracking from subtle ground movement or from temperature change, control joints are cut about half way through the edging every four to five feet (140 cm) while the concrete is still wet. In a colder climate, the control joints are cut every two to three feet (60 cm). The more the regional climatic conditions are cold, the more the joint of dilation have to be made closer.
